Options and Accessories: The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 does not merely overtake the competition, it whizzes by at such a speed youd be lucky to catch more than a nanosecond-glimpse of its taillights. With 987 SAE-net horsepower (1001 horses on the European ECE scale) and 922 pound-feet of torque produced by a 16-cylinder engine, the Veyron is not a not-to-be-trifled-with machine. It conquers the reign of former super car greats like the Lamborghini Diablo, with about 570 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and the McLaren F1, with nearly 630 horsepower and 479 pound-feet. Even the recently unveiled 660 horsepower Ferrari Enzo seems paltry in comparison.
Bugatti, one of the greatest makes of the 1930s, disappeared after 1956, with the failure of its Type 101 luxury car. In 1987, Romano Artioli, a wealthy Italian car dealer, acquired the rights to the Bugatti name and built a factory in Italy. In 1991, he resurrected Bugatti with the release of the EB110. The EB stood for Ettore Bugatti, the companys founder, and the 110 commemorated the 110th anniversary of his birth. Despite initial exuberance over the new Bugatti, it sold poorly due to tightening economic conditions. In 1995, production of the EB110 stopped and the company again lay dormant. Several years later, Volkswagen acquired Bugatti. This came at a time just after Volkswagen had lost its bid for Rolls-Royce to BMW; a time when VW wanted to augment its high-end lineup, which consisted of just Bentley. And so, at the 1999 Toyko Auto Show, VW unveiled the Veyron, named after Bugatti driver Pierre Veyron, who won Le Mans in 1939. It was designed in the Volkswagen studio headed by Hartmut Warkuss and assembled in a factory near Bugattis ancestral home of Molsheim, France.
When first presented, the Veyrons carbon-fiber-and-aluminum body held an 18-cylinder version of one of VWs modular engines. But, the production model will use the mammoth 64-valve W-16 first seen in the Bentley Hunaudieres concept. To produce the 987 horsepower, VW fitted the 8.0 liter W-16 with four turbochargers, variable valve timing, and a direct-injection system. The seven-speed sequential manual transmission transmits enough power to launch the Veyron to 60 mph in just less than three seconds. Its top speed is reportedly a record-breaking 252 mph.
Not surprisingly, the Veyrons price tag is a high as its specs.
